DSR Standards and Forbidden Words Making Seller Angry

Dear eBay Queen;

I accessed my eBay account today and the “alert” told me I did not meet their new April 2010 DSR standards and I better improve them.

I ship my orders well within my “three business day” selection, usually the next mail run after receiving payment.  The only way I can improve that is to ship them before they are actually bid on.

The only rating I passed on was “Communication,” so that means I fell short on all the other ratings.  I can’t seem to get access to the rating specifics and even if I can, it doesn’t matter because I can’t address any of them.  It says contact with the buyers that are rating you is forbidden, I thought that rater identity was anonymous from the get go.

My head is not so deep in the eBay sand that I can’t see offering free shipping is what eBay would like me to do.  That way they get a cut of my shipping COSTS in their FVF and in their sister site, PayPal fees as well.

eBay has steadily turned on sellers for sometime.  They have forgotten who brought them to the dance.  Sellers have been their bread and butter, because buyers do not pay invoices.

The number of eBay buyers has dropped because of the economy and some other reasons, but the matter of seller treatment is a double whammy.

Marv

Dear Marv;

I am really sorry you are experiencing this frustration with eBay policy.  There are many sellers that are in the same boat with you.  Except, it’s not a boat, it’s a 100,000 + passenger ship.  I would urge you to keep trying if you enjoy selling on eBay.  If not, have you tried Amazon, Bonanzle, Etsy, or your own webstore?

I hope that you resolve your problems with eBay, and you are back selling your wares.

Dear eBay Queen;

I listed a bunch of new auctions tonight, but two just wouldn’t list — kept getting errors for prohibited words in the titles and/or descriptions. I had NO idea what the problem was, and it took me FOREVER to figure it out!

The first problem I should have seen right away — IVORY. The name of the manufacturer of this celluloid item was IVORY PY-RA-LIN.  Had to remove the I-word and tell the shoppers to see if they can just read it on the back of the item in the photo.

But the second one was a real stumper. The only error I received was a pop up telling me a word was not allowed, but they didn’t tell me what the word was!

The description included all sorts of possibly offensive words copied straight from the documents themselves. I had to read the VERY long description over and over until I caught the problem. Its am selling a collection of very old documents, and two of the items were Western Union Telegrams. Bingo! For some reason, eBay is afraid of, or hates Western Union. So I had to change it to W. U. Telegrams (they do show in the photos).  I feel sorry for anyone who collects Western Union memorabilia.

There are currently 32 auctions with the words Western Union in the titles, and there are 83 if you search descriptions, too. I just don’t understand how the other sellers are able to list these auctions. I use a third-party program, and I suppose most of the other sellers are using eBay’s software, so you’d think I could get away with more than they can. Any ideas on how they get away with it?

Dear PinkPosy;

This is one of my pet peeves also.  It could make a person CRAZY trying to figure out what word is offensive!  I did a little research on eBay and I came up with some discussion about it here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/offensive.html . I have emailed eBay and asked them to provide a list of offensive words to help all of us comply with their policies.  I urge you to do the same also.  I don’t think they realize the time it takes trying to figure out what is wrong with a listing that will not list.

I use Blackthorne Pro (eBay Software), and I’ve received ALL kinds of error messages when listing this week, similar to the one you are describing.  I think this is an area they have just updated.

Seller Turns Down Buyer’s Best Offer..

Dear eBay Queen;

After reading about all the good deals to be found on eBay, I decided to start buying on there in November. I have bought maybe 5 to 8 things on eBay, and LOTS of items on the internet.  I recently learned of eBay’s Best Offer service.  I made offers on 2 different items, and I received some rude answers back from the sellers.

My first item was a Christopher Radko Santa pin.  The seller wanted 24.99 with free shipping.  I offered $10.00.  The seller countered with $12.00.  I countered back with $8.00, and sent a note to let them know that the same pin another seller was selling for $8.99.  The seller declined my offer, and told me to buy it from the other seller!  I can’t believe they would be so rude!

My second item I made a best offer on was a pair of Nike Shox running shoes.  The seller had $70.00 or Best Offer with free shipping.  I offered $35.00.  The seller countered with $59.00, I countered back with $29.00.  They didn’t counter back, but just declined my offer and told me they were blocking me as a buyer!
What is going on with sellers these days?  Don’t they want to sell their items?

DHK; Paola

Dear DHK;

I always like to hear that new people are buying on eBay.  I hope you will continue to bid and make purchases there.  eBay needs people like you bidding and buying. Best Offer is a great tool for buyers and sellers. Sellers like it because it sparks an interest from buyers and buyers like it because they can bargain with the seller.

I believe the problem with the sellers you mentioned, might be in the way you are using Best Offer.  Many sellers would take your offers as a slight. You made offers to a seller that are half of the asking price, and when they countered with a different figure; you went lower than your first offer.  This might seem like an insult to most sellers. I completely understand that you want a good deal, (we all do), but many sellers make a living by selling their items this way.  I hope you won’t be discouraged by these two sellers reactions.

Dear eBay Queen;

I just received two neutral feedbacks from a buyer that I filed a NON-payment against. She did not pay for either item for 18 days.  She eventually paid for it, and I sent it the same day she paid.  I never received an email from her, but in the feedback she left, she claims the first item, a set of Depression glass sherbets arrived broken.  The second item was a box of old children’s books.  She remarked in feedback how I used an old box to ship in (she liked the books, but hated the box).

When I emailed her about the neutrals, she told me I was lucky she didn’t leave a negative.  She wasn't happy from the beginning because I wouldn't combine shipping.   I explained to her that I could not send both items media mail, and I thought she understood I was actually saving her money by sending them separately.

What should I do? I can’t believe I get to look at these two neutrals for a year.  SANTA, if you're out there, please put all the difficult buyers in my Blocked Buyers list.

Teresa; Wellsville, KS

Dear Teresa;

I am really sorry about the neutrals.  I think the best thing you can do is respond to the neutrals, and contact eBay to let them know what happened. You will want to explain your case, and let them know how you were upfront with your buyer before she paid.  eBay will know, but explain to them how you can not send books and glassware media mail together. You will want to include all of the communication between you and the buyer.

 Most people, even frequent buyers and sellers don’t understand all the shipping rules and regulations of the post office.  Here’s to 2010 being neutral and negative free.

When Your eBay Package Comes Postage Due Who is Responsible?

Dear eBay Queen;

This has never happened to me and I don't know what to do. Here is the story.

My brother-in-law does not have an eBay or PayPal account, and he wants me to order a computer part.  I received the part today, but there is $2.03 postage due. The seller sent it out 1st Class Mail with delivery confirmation. I asked my post master what the problem was, and he said that the package didn't conform to the rule saying all first class packages must be at least ¾”.

I emailed the seller, and he is fussing with me because this part was inexpensive, (around 5.00) and he offered free shipping on it. To his credit, he did respond back to me.  I have sent him a picture of the receipt for the postage and a close up of the package with the amount visible on it.

If the seller refuses to give me back the money that I paid in shipping, should I make my brother-in-law pay me since it’s his part? Isn’t there some kind of thing I can file with PayPal?

Thanks for any advice,

John G.

Dear John;

I would ask the seller to refund your money for the $2.03 postal mistake. If he refuses to pay for his error, I would contact eBay and let him know what happened. If the seller does not refund your money, you could contact eBay and let them know. If all else fails; you can give the seller a negative.

Dear eBay Queen;

I checked out the new requirements for eBay UK, and it looks like they are going to REQUIRE free shipping on media mail items. I have learned that eBay “tries” things out in other countries, before they do it in the USA.  I would be so angry if I was a UK media seller. That's ridiculous!

Here’s what the new rule says: Free postage and packaging for more Media categories. Beginning October 19th, 2009, sellers listing in selected media categories will be required to offer free Post and Parcel as their first domestic postage option. To help you adapt listings quickly and easily, we're also introducing new bulk editing functionality in mid September.

 Excessive P&P costs are often mentioned as a major reason for buyers spending less on eBay – especially in the very competitive media categories. Where eBay has tested making offering a free delivery service a requirement, we have seen buyers respond positively and conversion rates of listed items rise.

Media items are often impulse purchases and buyers perceive free P&P as a great deal. By making postage & packaging free we aim to attract more buyers to the media categories and increase sales for media sellers.

TAKE ACTION:
a.. Understand the Media categories where free P&P will be introduced (see above).
b.. Amend your listings with the new bulk editing functionality before 19th October, 2009.
c.. Take a look at our checklist to ensure your business is covered for these changes.

All I know is that EVERY TIME eBay takes it upon themselves to "improve" my sales, they never seem to improve. When do you think they are going to do this in the United States?

McKenzie; Lee’s Summit

Dear McKenzie;

I don’t know if eBay will do this. It’s really hard to predict what they will do next. Sometimes I am completely shocked at some of the changes they have made. If they do make this change it will be to compete with Amazon.

As a buyer, I think free shipping is nice, but I can’t imagine eBay requiring a seller to do this. As your grandmother probably told you, “Nothing in life is free”. Free shipping is the same. Either way you are going to pay for it.

You are right, about eBay trying out things in other countries before they implement them in the United States. If they do roll out this free shipping change in the US it won’t be for another six months to a year.
