Introduction to Confirmation Class

September 7th

Introduction Confirmation Class

What does it mean to discover something — or someone?

They say that Columbus discovered America, but that’s not really true.  He only approached the edge of America.  He landed at some island in the Bahamas.  But he never stood on the sandy beaches of Florida. He never dipped his feet in the Mississippi River, or smelled the air high up in the Rocky Mountains.  He never swam in the cool waters of the Great Lakes or felt the dry heat of the desert southwest.  In fact, he never experienced the reality of America at all. Even worse, Columbus thought the continent, whose edge he had approached was Asia! He had a false idea of what it was which is worse than NO IDEA AT ALL!

The same thing can be said for many people and what they know about Jesus Christ. They know the name of Jesus.  They know that a man by that name lived on earth a long time ago, and they might even know that he was born in a manger, and died on the cross. Just like Columbus having this kind of knowledge is just merely approaching the edge of Jesus.  They have never met HIM person to person.  They have never felt HIS power, or tasted HIS goodness, or known HIS wisdom.  Even worse, many people have false ideas about Jesus.  Some people believe He was merely a prominent religious leader of the past, like Mohammed, Confucius or Buddha. They were wrong, just as Columbus wrongly supposed that America was Asia.

God wants you to really discover His Son, Jesus Christ.  He doesn’t want you to just to approach the edge, and go no further.  God does not want you to get a false idea of Jesus from other people. God wants you to know Jesus.

During these classes we are going to focus on the six fundamental truths about Jesus Christ.  These six things are important for us to know, in order to make a responsible choice to accept Him as our Savior and Lord. We will also learn what it means to follow Him, your part in the Chuch Body and what it means to publicly profess your faith.

Each week you will be asked to complete your homework and memorize a Bible verse. Most homework questions ask you to look up a passage in the Bible, and then write down some information that you find there.  Each Biblical selection tells some truth that will help you to understand what it means to choose and follow Jesus Christ.

In the eyes of God, the true, Christian Church is made up of all people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, in accordance with the teachings of the Bible.  It includes members of many denominations (such as Baptist, Eastern Orthodox, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roam Catholic etc.,) as well as believers and congregations who are not affiliated with any denomination. God doesn’t care which church organization you are connected to, as long as it doesn’t teach and practice things that directly contradict the Bible.  He does care that you should be worshiping praying and working in a committed relationship with other Christians.
