Confirmation Class: The Gifts of the Spirit

The Gifts of the Spirit
1. Your memory verse from I Corinthians 12:4 is:
What does this mean to you?
2. I Corinthians 12:8-10 names nine gifts, or abilities, that the Holy Spirit may give to Christians. List those nine gifts on the lines below:
A. _________________________________________________
B. _________________________________________________
C. _________________________________________________
D. _________________________________________________
E. _________________________________________________
F. _________________________________________________
G. _________________________________________________
H. _________________________________________________
I. _________________________________________________
(the Holy Spirit gives other gifts besides those above, these are examples.)
The Holy Spirit gives gifts to all Christians. These gifts are not toys, but are abilities to do certain things; for example, to teach, to speak or pray in a new language, or to help a sick person be healed by the power of God.
Unlike the fruits of the Spirit, which have to be grown and cultivated over a period of time, the gifts of the Spirit just have to be received and exercised. When you receive a gift, it may take you some time to get accustomed to using it. For example if you are given the gift of teaching, that does not mean that you can go right out and be successful teacher without doing any work. It means the work you do will accomplish more, because the gift is there with it.
3. What new subject does Paul bring up to his readers in I Corinthians 12:1?
4. According to Hebrews 2:4, God bore witness (to His Word) by signs, wonders, miracles and what else?
Different Christians may receive different gifts. One might receive the gift of teaching, for example, while another receives the gift of administration, another the gift of healing, another gift of prophecy, and so on. There are 18 or more gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the New Testament.

Sometimes one person receives different gifts at different times. At one time, a person might exercise the gift of teaching, and another time the gift of faith and another time the gift of exhortation (encouragement).
Some of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are obviously supernatural, that is they involve doing things that are beyond our natural human power. For example, speaking in a language you have never learned, or having God’s special healing power touch another person through you. This should not surprise us, since the Bible says that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26), and it gives many examples of God working through people in miraculous ways.
Some gifts do not seem so supernatural, such as teaching, service, or administration. These gifts are just as important as being divine. God’s power is at work through them, even though they can also be natural abilities. Each gift is of equal importance in God’s eyes. God did not give us spiritual gifts so that we can boast, but so that we can serve Him and help others. The Holy Spirit has gifts for you every day. Ask Him to show you what they are; be willing to receive them; and you will experience their reality.
5. Why do you think Christians need special gifts of the Spirit besides our won natural abilities, in order to serve God?
6. What gifts did God give you?
7. What gift would you like to have?
Christian Character: The Fruit of the Spirit

Christian Character: The Fruit of the Spirit
1. In Galatians 5:22-23, there is a list of nine “fruits of the Spirit”.. that is, nine things that become part of a Christian’s character because of the influence of the Holy Spirit. List those fruits of the Spirit below:
1________________________ 2. ___________________________
3._______________________ 4.____________________________
5._______________________ 6.____________________________
7._______________________ 8.____________________________
9.__________________________
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Even more than what we do, God is concerned about what we become—that is, what kind of person we get to be, as we grow older. God wants each of us to become a person whose character is like that of Jesus. This truth was brought out in Lesson 3 of this book where we learned that Jesus Christ is the One Who changes people’s hearts and lives. He begins by changing our character and personality, which leads to a change in our actions. Good character on the inside causes good behavior on the outside.
2. 1. Of the nine characteristics in Galatians 5:22-23 which do you think you are doing pretty good with? Which do you think you need some help with?
God’s standards of good character are much higher than the world’s standards. To start with , God wants our character to be built on the foundation of love. We might think that’s an easy thing to have, until we realize what kind of love God is talking about. If God only wanted us to love certain people.. the easy ones, the ones who don’t hurt us, the ones who return our love… that would not be so hard. But God wants us to love everyone, especially the difficult people.. the mean ones, the nasty ones, the ugly ones, the ones who hurt us, the ones who can’t or won’t give anything in return. It takes power to develop that kind of love, more power than any of us have within ourselves. This power comes not from us, but from the Holy Spirit.
3. 2. According to II Timothy 1:7, what kind of Spirit has God given us?
4. 3. In Romans 5:5, what has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit?
Along with love, there are other qualities that make up the kind of character that God wants us to have. Some of them are listed in Galatians 5:22-23. These nine things are the basic elements of what a Christian’s personality should be. It takes the power of the Holy Spirit to develop them in the way that God wants them to be in our lives.
5. 4. In John 14:26, Jesus uses another name for the Holy Spirit. What is it?
5. What does He say the Holy Spirit will do for us?
Did you notice these characters you are to have are called FRUITS instead of GIFTS? Gifts just have to be received and used, but fruit has to be cultivated and grown. That takes time and effort. God doesn’t just give us a Christian personality, instantaneously. You have to cultivate and grow it, over a period of time. The Holy Spirit provides the power, but we have to make the choices to activate that power. We must desire to be the kind of person that God wants us to be, and then ask the Holy Spirit to help us carry out a course of action that changes us into that kind of person.
6. 6. Describe some ways in which a person could cultivate a specific fruit of the Spirit in their life today. For example, an athlete could cultivate self-control by sticking their training program. What are some other examples?
II Corinthians 3:18 says that, as we behold the glory of the Lord, we are being chaged into His likeness, from one degree of glory to another. What is the glory of the Lord that we behold? It is more than the rays of light or the luminous clouds that are shown surrounding Him in may pictures. Christ’s real glory is HIS character of love and justice and truth and wisdom, which we “behold” in our minds as we study the Bible, and as we work and pray together with other Christians. For us to be changed into His glory means that our character is changed to be like His character… not all at once, but from degree to degree, that is, step by step over the months and years. In this way, the Fruit of the Spirit becomes a growing reality in our lives.
