Confirmation Class: Study and Learning Scriptures
March 1st 2009
Studying & Learning the Scriptures
As followers of Jesus, we need spiritual food that gives us strength and energy, and helps us to grow. The Bible is that spiritual food.
1. In Matthew 4:4, what does Jesus say we should live by?
To be strong, active and growing Christians, we need a steady diet of Bible reading and study. God said to Joshua, “This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success” (Joshua 1:8)
2. What does II Timothy 3:16 tell us about all scripture (that is the whole Bible)?
The Bible is different from all other books, because it was especially inspired by God. II Peter 1:20-21 says that the prophets who wrote the Bible were moved by the Holy Spirit to speak from God, instead of just telling their own thoughts.
3. What does Hebrews 4:12 say the word of God is?
4. What does Psalm 119:105 say God’s Word is?
5. In Psalm 119:11, what did the author do with God’s Word?
We should study the Bible in two ways:
FIRST, we should do it privately, and or with our immediate family, every day. Each time we read it, we should pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand it. In this way, we should read the Bible all the way through, several chapters a day—and not just once, but over and over again as the years go by, throughout our entire life. There is nothing else that you can do which will pay you back so richly, for the time you spend doing it. People spend huge amounts of time watching television, playing games and in other ways that are far less beneficial to health and well being. Take 15 minutes a day to read the Bible, and you will be greatly rewarded.
SECOND, every Christian should participate in organized group Bible study, so that you can discuss and learn the more difficult things in the Bible with the help of good teachers. There are some things in the Bible that we cannot learn adequately without the help of other Christians, including those who are especially gifted and educated to be teachers of God’s Word.
6. What do you spend your time on? Could you find 15 minutes to read the Bible daily?
7. How do we know that the Bible is God’s Word?
Jesus Himself regarded the Old Testament Scriptures as the Word of God, and said so many times.
A: Matthew 5:17-18
B: Luke 24:44
C: John 10:35
In regards to the New Testament, Jesus said that His own words were inspired by God (John 14:10)
There are different English translations of the Bible, because it was originally written other languages (before the English language even existed). Among the English translations popularly used today are: King James Version, The Revised Standard Version, the New Revised Standard Version, the Message Bible, the New International Version, Today’s English Version (aka the Good News Bible), and the New King James Version. The Amplified Bible is excellent because it gives the broader meaning of many Greek and Hebrew words. The Living Bible is very clear and easy to read, but it is a paraphrase rather than an actual translation.
8. What version of the Bible do you own?
